Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a three‑day state visit to Seychelles on 27 June 2026. He will be the Guest of Honour at the island nation’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations and will address the National Assembly. The visit marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Background
India and Seychelles established diplomatic ties in 1976. Over the past decade the relationship has deepened through frequent high‑level visits and defence cooperation. In February 2026 Seychelles President Patrick Herminie visited India and both governments unveiled the India–Seychelles Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages (SESEL). The vision builds on India’s broader maritime doctrine known as MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
Highlights of the visit
- Golden Jubilee celebrations: The Prime Minister will take part in Seychelles’ National Day events as Guest of Honour, underscoring the strong people‑to‑people ties.
- First address: He will become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Seychelles National Assembly, reflecting shared democratic traditions.
- Vision MAHASAGAR: Discussions will focus on implementing the SESEL roadmap, which covers maritime security, climate resilience, digital governance, healthcare, education and blue‑economy cooperation.
- Special economic package: During President Herminie’s February visit India announced a US$175 million package, including a US$125 million line of credit and US$50 million in grants to support infrastructure and community projects.
- Strategic importance: Seychelles sits near major shipping lanes in the western Indian Ocean. Partnership enhances maritime domain awareness, anti‑piracy operations and a free and open Indo‑Pacific.
Conclusion
The visit reinforces India’s commitment to its island partners and emphasises that maritime security, development and climate resilience are interconnected. Strengthening ties with Seychelles advances India’s broader vision for a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
