Why in news?

The Indian Army announced plans to induct the first regiment of the indigenous 155 mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) after successful trials.

Development background

  • The ATAGS is a joint project of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with private partners such as Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems.
  • It was conceived under the “Make in India” initiative to reduce reliance on imported artillery systems.

Technical specifications

  • Calibre & range: 155 mm gun with a 52‑calibre barrel that can fire projectiles up to about 48 kilometres using extended‑range ammunition.
  • Rapid deployment: Capable of transitioning from travel to firing mode within 90 seconds and firing multiple rounds per minute.
  • Automation: Equipped with an automated ammunition handling and loading system, reducing crew workload.
  • Mobility: Mounted on an 8×8 all‑terrain vehicle, allowing it to move quickly and support “shoot‑and‑scoot” tactics to evade counter‑battery fire.
  • Indigenous content: Over 70 percent of components are sourced domestically, including barrels, breech mechanisms and electronics.

Significance

  • Enhances the Indian Army’s firepower and ability to provide precision support during conflicts.
  • Boosts self‑reliance in defence manufacturing and opens avenues for exporting indigenous artillery to friendly countries.
  • Demonstrates successful collaboration between public and private sectors in high‑technology defence projects.
