Why in news?
The Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region recently laid the foundation stone for the Integrated Sohra Tourism Circuit in Meghalaya. This ambitious project aims to turn Sohra (popularly known as Cherrapunji) into a multi‑day, sustainable tourism destination and is being funded under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM‑DevINE).
Background
Sohra sits on a high plateau in Meghalaya and is famed for its spectacular waterfalls, living root bridges and heavy monsoon rains. Despite its natural beauty, most tourists visit for only a few hours because of limited facilities. The PM‑DevINE scheme, launched in 2022, provides targeted funding for infrastructure and social development in the North East. The Sohra project represents one of the programme’s largest investments.
Key elements of the project
- Massive investment: Over ₹650 crore will be spent on the circuit, with ₹221 crore coming directly from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. The aim is to create a multi‑day experience rather than a quick visit.
- Sohra Experience Centre: At Kutmadan, a new complex costing ₹115 crore will feature amphitheatres, a rain experience park, art galleries and craft pavilions to showcase Meghalaya’s tribal heritage.
- Natural attractions: Supporting projects include the improvement of the Nohkalikai Falls precinct (₹26 crore), Mawsmai Eco Park (₹29 crore), the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint, and development of Shella Riverside and Wahkaliar Canyon. Adventure activities such as hot‑air balloon rides are planned.
- Infrastructure upgrades: New roads like the Pynursla– Latangriwan–Mawlynnong route and the Mawshynrut–Hahim road will improve access to tourist spots. A bridge over the Umngot River and extension of Umroi Airport’s runway will cut travel time between Guwahati and Sohra to about four hours.
- Job creation and skills: The project is expected to create around 4,600 direct and indirect jobs. Training programmes are underway to equip local youth with hospitality and eco‑tourism skills.
Significance
- Sustainable tourism: By focusing on cultural heritage and environmental protection, the circuit seeks to attract responsible travellers and ensure that tourism benefits local communities.
- Economic boost: The project could raise tourist spending sixfold in the area, providing new income streams for residents and encouraging entrepreneurship.
- Regional connectivity: Improved roads and air links will integrate Meghalaya more closely with the rest of the country and support trade as well as tourism.
Conclusion
The Integrated Sohra Tourism Circuit represents a major investment in sustainable tourism. By combining infrastructure improvements with cultural experiences and skill development, the project aims to make Cherrapunji a must‑visit destination while preserving its unique environment and benefiting its people.
