Why in news?

On 13 May 2026 the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched the “IP Catalyst” initiative. This digital platform aims to support innovators, start‑ups and micro‑, small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises by providing a complete ecosystem for managing intellectual property and commercialising new technologies.

Background

India files a large number of patents each year—over 1.43 lakh applications were recorded in 2025–26—but only a small share of these patents reach the market. To bridge the gap between research and commercially successful products, MeitY tasked the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C‑DAC) in Pune with building a platform that connects innovators with intellectual property (IP) services and technology transfer opportunities.

Main features

  • Digital ecosystem: IP Catalyst offers a unified online portal where innovators can access IP filing support, search for prior art, perform IP valuation, obtain technology transfer services and connect with potential investors or licensees. It aims to streamline the entire innovation cycle from idea to product.
  • Financial support: Start‑ups and MSMEs can receive assistance for filing patents, trademarks and industrial designs both in India and abroad. Special provisions encourage women entrepreneurs and innovators from Tier‑II and Tier‑III cities.
  • Commercialisation focus: The platform emphasises converting patents into products and profits. It facilitates licensing agreements, technology transfer and industry–academia collaborations.
  • Training and awareness: IP Catalyst plans to conduct workshops and awareness programmes to educate innovators about the importance of protecting intellectual property and using it to gain a competitive advantage.
