Why in news?
On 26 July 2025 India observed the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour the soldiers who reclaimed strategic heights during the 1999 Kargil War.
Background of the Kargil War
- In May 1999, Pakistani troops and militants occupied peaks along the Dras, Batalik and Kaksar sectors in Ladakh with the aim of cutting National Highway‑1A between Srinagar and Leh.
- India responded with Operation Vijay, in which soldiers fought at altitudes over 16,000 feet under extreme weather and enemy fire. The Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar supported ground troops without crossing the Line of Control.
- By 26 July 1999, Indian forces had recaptured all positions; 545 Indian soldiers were martyred during the conflict.
Significance of the day
- Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrates bravery and honours the sacrifices of soldiers who defended India’s territorial integrity.
- The war prompted military reforms such as the creation of the Chief of Defence Staff and improvements in joint command structures. It also boosted investment in mountain warfare equipment and surveillance.
