Why in news?
The Government of India has announced the recipients of the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak for 2025. This year 1,466 personnel from various state police forces, Union Territories, Central Armed Police Forces and central police organisations have been recognised for their exemplary service.
Background
The Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak was instituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in February 2024. It consolidated four earlier awards—the Special Operation Medal, the Medal for Excellence in Investigation, the Exceptional Intelligence Efficiency Medal and the Union Home Minister’s Award for Meritorious Service—into a single honour. By merging them, the government aimed to standardise recognition and raise the prestige associated with professional excellence.
Aims and scope
- Encourage professionalism: The award recognises outstanding work and high professional standards among officers and officials.
- Boost morale: Recognition is intended to motivate personnel to perform their duties with dedication and integrity.
- Fields covered: Awards are given in four areas—Special Operations, Investigation, Intelligence and Forensic Science.
- Eligibility: Personnel from state and Union Territory police forces, security organisations, intelligence branches, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and forensic science laboratories are eligible.
- Announcement date: Winners are declared every year on 31 October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Why it matters
- Recognition of service: Honouring personnel for specialised roles such as intelligence gathering or forensic science highlights the diverse skills needed to maintain law and order.
- Motivation and morale: Awards inspire officers to pursue excellence and instil pride in their work.
- Standardisation: Consolidating multiple medals into one helps streamline the awards system and raises awareness among the public.
