Why in news?
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle process for FASTag users. The updated rules aim to make it easier for motorists to verify that their FASTag is linked to the correct vehicle and to prepare the tolling system for future upgrades.
Background
FASTag uses radio‑frequency identification (RFID) technology to allow cashless toll payments while a vehicle is in motion. To prevent fraud and mis‑linked tags, the NHAI introduced the KYV procedure in 2024. Under this system, motorists upload photographs of their vehicle and a copy of the registration certificate (RC) to confirm that the FASTag corresponds to the right vehicle. The process must be repeated every three years. It supports the ‘One Vehicle – One FASTag’ principle and is implemented by the National Highways Authority of India in coordination with the National Payments Corporation of India.
What has changed?
- Fewer photographs: Users now only need to upload one front‑view photograph showing the number plate and the FASTag. Earlier guidelines also required a side view of the vehicle.
- Automatic RC verification: Instead of uploading the registration certificate manually, users can enter their vehicle number, chassis number or registered mobile number. The system pulls RC details directly from the VAHAN database, reducing paperwork.
- Assistance from banks: Banks issuing FASTags must assist their customers with KYV verification and send reminders when it is due. Previously issued FASTags remain active unless a complaint is received.
Why it matters
- Smoother toll journeys: Verified tags reduce the risk of being blocked at toll plazas due to mismatched or suspicious accounts.
- Preventing misuse: Regular verification helps curb the creation of fake tags or linking one tag to multiple vehicles, ensuring revenue goes to the correct account.
- Preparing for future: A robust KYV system is necessary for the introduction of multi‑lane free flow tolling, where vehicles pass through without any barriers.
