Why in news?
Scientists from the ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources recently described a new species of freshwater fish, Labeo kaage, from the Shivanasamudra stretch of the river Cauvery in Karnataka. The discovery adds to the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats and highlights the need to protect riverine habitats.
Background
The genus Labeo includes many carp species found in rivers and lakes of South Asia and Africa. Members of this genus are characterised by their elongated bodies and downward‑facing mouths adapted for grazing on algae and organic matter. Some species, such as rohu (Labeo rohita), are important in aquaculture.
Key details of the discovery
- Distinct traits: Labeo kaage belongs to the “dark labeo” group. It has a dark brown body with a bluish sheen and orange fins. The species was named after the Kannada word kaage, meaning crow, because local fishers call it “kaage meenu.”
- Researchers: The team included Rahul G. Kumar, Charan Ravi and other scientists. They also recently described two related species: Labeo chekida and Labeo uru.
- Conservation concerns: Freshwater fish diversity in the Cauvery basin faces threats from habitat destruction, sand mining, pollution and large dams. Identifying new species helps conservationists plan measures to protect them.
- Ecological role: Labeo kaage feeds on algae and detritus, helping to keep river ecosystems clean. Its presence indicates a relatively undisturbed habitat.
