Why in news?

The Ministry of Rural Development unveiled the LokOS platform under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission. LokOS will digitise record‑keeping and financial transactions of women self‑help groups across India. Officials highlighted that the system will support programmes such as the Lakhpati Didi initiative by giving members unique digital identities and real‑time access to their savings and loans. The release emphasised transparency and accountability in grassroots finance.

Background

DAY‑NRLM was launched in 2011 to organise rural women into self‑help groups, provide credit and improve livelihoods. In early years records were maintained on paper, making monitoring difficult. LokOS was conceived as a web‑ and mobile‑based core banking system for these groups. It assigns each member a unique digital ID and captures transactions electronically. The platform covers every level of the mission – from village organisations to national headquarters – and integrates with the Public Financial Management System for timely payments.

Key features

  • The system records savings, internal lending and bank linkages for over eight million self‑help groups and their federations across thirty‑four states and union territories.
  • Role‑based access allows community cadres, block coordinators and state offices to update records and track progress in real time. Members can check balances through a mobile app.
  • Unique digital identities for nearly nine crore rural women ensure accurate member profiling and prevent duplication.
  • Integrated analytics help planners measure credit uptake, loan repayment and enterprise performance to support initiatives like SHE‑LEAPS for rural women entrepreneurs.
  • LokOS provides evidence for the government’s goal of creating three crore “Lakhpati Didi” households by improving access to bank credit and markets.

Conclusion

LokOS transforms self‑help groups from paper‑based entities into digitally empowered collectives. By capturing accurate data and ensuring transparency, the platform is expected to reduce leakages and build confidence among banks and investors. Over time, digital financial management should help rural women earn higher incomes and scale up their enterprises.
