The 2026 Amarnath pilgrimage again brought large numbers of people into high-altitude marmot habitat. Long-tailed marmots live along parts of the routes through the Kashmir Himalaya. Wildlife observers warned visitors against feeding, chasing or handling them. These actions can alter natural behaviour and expose animals to traffic, waste and crowding. The concern is not opposition to pilgrimage. It is a call for responsible movement through a fragile alpine landscape.
Identification and distribution
The long-tailed marmot’s scientific name is Marmota caudata. It belongs to the squirrel family, Sciuridae. Its range extends across high mountains of Central and South Asia. Recorded countries include India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and several Central Asian republics.
Within India, the species occurs in parts of Ladakh and the Kashmir Himalaya. It favours open alpine meadows, rocky slopes and scrub. Burrows provide shelter from predators and extreme weather. A long tail and reddish-brown tones help distinguish it from some related marmots.
Life in a short mountain summer
High-altitude animals face cold winters and a brief growing season. Marmots feed mainly on grasses, herbs and other plants during warmer months. They must build body reserves before winter. Long periods of hibernation reduce energy use when food becomes scarce.

Pilgrims can watch marmots quietly from a distance. Photography does not require baiting or close pursuit. Food should remain sealed, and every item should return to a managed bin. A marmot approaching people may look friendly, but habituation is not natural trust. Visitors should never feed, touch or surround it. Distance protects the animal, the observer and the ecological character of the pilgrimage route.
