Why in news?

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and the Government of Mizoram launched a ₹189.79 crore Ginger Mission on 13 May 2026. The mission seeks to transform Mizoram’s Geographical Indication (GI)‑certified ginger into a premium global product through processing, branding and market integration. It aims to improve farmers’ incomes by moving them up the value chain rather than merely selling raw rhizomes.

Background

Ginger is a perennial herb whose rhizome is used worldwide as a spice and medicinal ingredient. Mizoram’s ginger, known locally as “Mizo ginger,” contains 6–8 percent oleoresin—higher than the global average—making it suitable for pharmaceutical and culinary uses. Despite this quality, farmers often receive only ₹8–15 per kilogram because they sell unprocessed rhizomes to middlemen. Recognising this, the state government developed a mission to add value and build brand recognition for Mizo ginger.

Main components

  • Convergence: The mission brings together multiple central ministries and agencies (agriculture, commerce and food processing) to coordinate funding and expertise.
  • Value addition: A processing hub in Mizoram will extract oleoresin and powder the rhizomes, increasing the product’s value several times. Three spoke centres will support farmers with sorting, washing and storage.
  • Branding and marketing: The mission will promote “Mizo ginger” as a premium product in domestic and international markets, capitalising on its GI status.
  • Market integration: Contracts with buyers and export houses will be facilitated to ensure farmers have assured markets. The mission plans to integrate about 20,000 farming households.

Conclusion

By focusing on processing and branding, the Mizoram Ginger Mission intends to turn a low‑margin crop into a high‑value product. The initiative also fits into the broader “Brand North East” strategy, which aims to showcase niche products from the region on the global stage.
