Why in news?

The National Statistics Office (NSO) has launched a beta version of its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the eSankhyiki portal. This server will allow artificial‑intelligence applications to directly access government datasets, making official statistics easier to use.

Background

eSankhyiki is a national portal designed to provide real‑time data to planners, researchers and the public. As India embraces AI‑driven decision‑making, the need to connect large language models and other tools to reliable data sources has grown. The MCP is a technical standard that enables AI applications to query datasets without downloading them.

Key features of MCP

  • AI‑friendly data access: Users can connect their own AI tools directly to datasets, avoiding the need for large downloads. This saves time and computing resources.
  • Integrated tools: MCP can link data sources (such as surveys and time‑series datasets) with search engines, calculators and workflows, creating a seamless environment for analysis.
  • Initial datasets: The beta server includes seven products — National Accounts Statistics, Consumer Price Index, Index of Industrial Production, Annual Survey of Industries, Periodic Labour Force Survey, Household Consumption Expenditure Survey and Multiple Indicator Survey — with more to come.
  • Supports Viksit Bharat goals: By making data easier to access and interpret, MCP will help policymakers craft evidence‑based programmes and will empower citizens and businesses to use official statistics in their own AI applications.

Significance

  • Democratising data: The protocol reduces barriers between users and government statistics, promoting transparency and participation.
  • Preparation for AI era: The launch comes ahead of the AI Impact Summit and aligns with efforts to integrate AI into governance under India’s digital agenda.
