Why in news?

What is NMBA?
Launched on 15 August 2020 by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, NMBA is a nationwide initiative to curb drug demand, raise awareness and provide treatment and rehabilitation.
Key features
- Targeted districts: The campaign focuses on 272 districts identified as having high rates of drug abuse based on surveys and intelligence reports.
- Three‑pronged approach: Supply reduction (led by the Narcotics Control Bureau), demand reduction (outreach and education) and treatment/rehabilitation (health departments and NGOs).
- Community involvement: District and state committees involving youth, women’s groups and civil society coordinate activities. Partnerships with organisations such as Art of Living and Brahma Kumaris support mass mobilisation.
- Technology integration: The NMBA app and website provide resources, helpline numbers and opportunities for volunteers.
Impact
The campaign has sensitised crores of citizens and trained thousands of master volunteers. By emphasising prevention and rehabilitation, it aims to reduce drug‑related crime and strengthen the social fabric. Continued funding and coordination are essential to sustain progress.
