Why in news?
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced the launch of NMBA App 2.0 to strengthen monitoring of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The upgraded application will provide real‑time reporting, educational materials and access to helplines.
Background
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (Drug‑Free India Campaign) was launched on 15 August 2020 in 272 districts to reduce substance abuse through awareness and community involvement. From 15 August 2023 the programme was extended to all districts. Officials say more than 26 crore people have been sensitised through rallies, workshops and pledge campaigns.
What’s new in NMBA App 2.0?
- Real‑time monitoring: The app allows field workers and NGOs to log awareness activities, enabling the ministry to track progress and identify areas needing attention.
- e‑Pledge and IEC materials: Citizens can take a digital pledge to avoid drugs and access posters, videos and success stories that promote healthy living.
- Support services: The app lists helpline numbers and nearby de‑addiction centres, connecting individuals and families to professional help.
- Role‑based access: Accredited NGOs and institutions receiving grants can upload financial and activity reports through the app, increasing transparency.
Importance of the campaign
- Substance abuse poses a serious social and public‑health challenge. NMBA encourages community participation, with volunteers acting as change agents in villages and urban areas.
- The integration of technology can improve coordination and accountability across districts.
- By linking individuals to counselling and treatment, the campaign aims to reduce addiction‑related stigma and improve recovery rates.
