Why in news?
India observed National Sports Day on 29 August to honour hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and to promote fitness and sports culture across the country. The theme for 2025 was “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main” (One hour on the playground).
About National Sports Day
The day is celebrated annually on 29 August, the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand (1905–1979), who is widely regarded as the greatest field hockey player in history. The central government introduced National Sports Day in 2012 to inspire youth participation in sports.
Objectives
- Honour athletes: The day recognises the achievements of sportspersons and encourages respect for sportsmanship.
- Promote fitness: Schools, universities and communities organise sports events and fitness drives to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
- Identify talent: The government uses the occasion to launch schemes and talent‑hunt programmes for budding athletes.
- National integration: Sports serve as a unifying force, transcending linguistic, regional and religious barriers.
Legacy of Major Dhyan Chand
- Born in Allahabad on 29 August 1905, Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army and developed extraordinary skills in hockey.
- He won three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932 and 1936), captivating audiences with his stick work and scoring prowess.
- In 2012 India’s highest sports honour was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in his memory.
- The 2025 theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main” encouraged citizens to spend at least one hour daily on physical activity.
