Why in news?
On 17 June 2026 the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved new appointments to the National Statistical Commission (NSC). The government chose Dr Saibal Chattopadhyay as Chairperson, with Prof Shubhabrata Das, Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh and Dr Madhavan Mukund as members. These appointments renewed public interest in the role and mandate of the NSC.
Background
The National Statistical Commission is a nodal body for official statistics in India. It was created in June 2005 following recommendations by the Rangarajan Commission, which reviewed the statistical system and suggested an independent oversight body. The NSC was constituted through a government resolution and became operational in July 2006. It has a part‑time chairperson and four part‑time members with expertise in economic, social and environmental statistics. The CEO of NITI Aayog serves as an ex‑officio member and the Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation acts as secretary of the commission.
New appointees
- Dr Saibal Chattopadhyay: A statistician and former director of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata. He holds advanced degrees in statistics from the University of Connecticut and Calcutta University. His research areas include sequential methods, survey sampling and quantitative marketing.
- Prof Shubhabrata Das: Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore with expertise in statistics, operational research and actuarial mathematics. He earned his PhD and MS in statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh: A retired Indian Statistical Service officer with over three decades of experience in economic and labour statistics, policy support and administration.
- Dr Madhavan Mukund: Director of the Chennai Mathematical Institute. He has a PhD in computer science from Aarhus University, Denmark and a B.Tech from IIT Bombay. He is known for work in theoretical computer science and education.
Functions and mandate
- Policy guidance: The NSC identifies core statistics needed for national development and evolves policies and priorities for the statistical system.
- Standards: It develops standard definitions, classifications and methodologies and lays down quality standards for official statistics.
- Coordination: The commission promotes coordination among central ministries and state agencies and conducts statistical audits to ensure accuracy and integrity.
- Public trust: It works to improve public trust in official data by recommending measures for transparency and timely dissemination.

The new appointments bring varied academic and administrative expertise to the NSC. Strengthening the commission can improve the quality of official statistics and help policymakers make evidence‑based decisions.
