Why in news?
Botanists have reported a new species of wild pea, Crotalaria phulei, from the Khairi–Umred forest near Nagpur. The species, named in honour of social reformer Savitribai Phule, was described in the journal Phytotaxa. The discovery adds to India’s rich flora and recognises a pioneering woman who championed education and women’s rights.
Background
Crotalaria is a large genus in the bean family (Fabaceae) with more than 700 species worldwide, commonly known as rattle pods. Many species are shrubs or herbs used for green manure and soil improvement. The new species was found in a patch of moist deciduous forest near Nagpur and differs from known relatives by its reduced‑flowered inflorescences, narrow leaves and distinctive seed pods. It is believed to have a very restricted distribution.
Key characteristics and significance
- Distinct morphology: Crotalaria phulei is a small herb with slender stems and few yellow flowers borne in short clusters. Its pods are slightly inflated and rattle when dry, a trait typical of the genus.
- Named after Savitribai Phule: The species honours Savitribai Phule (1831‑1897), a social reformer who co‑founded India’s first girls’ school. Naming the plant after her draws attention to the contributions of women in education and social justice.
- Conservation status: The species is known only from its type locality. Researchers have provisionally assessed it as “Data Deficient” under the IUCN criteria and recommend further surveys to determine its population size and threats.
- Importance of documentation: New plant discoveries highlight the biodiversity of central India’s forests. Systematic surveys and protection of habitats are needed so that unique species do not vanish before they are fully understood.
Conclusion
The identification of Crotalaria phulei underscores the importance of exploring lesser‑known forests. Recognising the species after Savitribai Phule celebrates the linkage between natural heritage and social reform. Protecting such rare plants requires concerted efforts to conserve their habitats.
