Why in news?
In June 2026 the government released the names of six soldiers who died during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. These names will be inscribed on the National War Memorial in New Delhi. It is the first time details of this secret cross‑border operation have been made public.
Background
Operation Sindoor was conducted from 7 to 10 May 2025 as India’s response to the Pahalgam massacre. Special forces struck terrorist camps across the Line of Control. Five Indian Army personnel and one Indian Air Force sergeant lost their lives. The fallen heroes include Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer Mood Muralinaik, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh and Sergeant Surendra Kumar. Until now their names were withheld for security reasons.
National War Memorial
- Inauguration: The National War Memorial was dedicated to the nation in February 2019. It is located near India Gate and honours about 25,942 soldiers who laid down their lives since Independence.
- Design: The memorial comprises four concentric circles—Amar Chakra (circle of immortality), Veerta Chakra (circle of bravery), Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (circle of protection). An eternal flame burns at the centre.
- Operation Sindoor recognition: The addition of the six names underscores India’s commitment to remember personnel who died in covert operations.
