Why in news?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) park at Warangal in Telangana in May 2026. The park is designed to provide an integrated textile value chain—from spinning to garment making—on a single campus. It aims to attract significant investment and create thousands of jobs while reducing logistics costs for the industry.
Background
PM MITRA is a scheme of the Ministry of Textiles inspired by the government’s “5F” vision: Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign. Announced in 2021, the scheme approved seven large parks across India to make the textile sector globally competitive. The parks are developed by special‑purpose vehicles jointly owned by the central and state governments and operated through public‑private partnerships. To encourage development, the Centre offers development capital support of up to ₹500 crore for greenfield projects and ₹200 crore for brownfield projects, covering 30 % of the project cost. Early investors are eligible for an additional competitive incentive support of up to ₹300 crore.
Warangal park highlights
- Area and cost: The park spans 1,327 acres and is being developed at a cost of ₹1,695.54 crore. Around 62 % of the land is earmarked for industry, 20 % for utilities and 10 % for commercial and residential use.
- Infrastructure: The site features 13 kilometres of eight‑lane internal roads, a 20‑MVA electrical substation, 32 MLD water supply, an integrated logistics park and worker dormitories. A zero‑liquid‑discharge effluent treatment plant ensures that wastewater is recycled and environmental standards are met.
- Economic impact: Officials expect the park to attract investments exceeding ₹6,000 crore and create around 24,400 direct employment opportunities. Its location near the Nagpur–Vijayawada Expressway and the “golden quadrilateral” highway network enhances connectivity with major markets.
Other PM MITRA parks
The Centre has approved six additional PM MITRA parks across the country:
- Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu – government‑led model.
- Navsari, Gujarat – public‑private master developer model.
- Kalaburagi, Karnataka – public‑private master developer model.
- Dhar, Madhya Pradesh – government‑led model.
- Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – public‑private master developer model.
- Amravati, Maharashtra – state implementing agency model.
Significance
By integrating all steps of textile manufacturing, PM MITRA parks aim to create economies of scale and reduce the time and cost of moving materials between different stages of production. They are expected to boost exports, generate employment and strengthen India’s position in the global textile supply chain.
