Why in news?
The Ministry of Women and Child Development has invited nominations for the 2026 Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. Children aged between five and eighteen years who have achieved extraordinary feats in the past two years may be nominated until 31 July. The awards will be presented by the President of India on Veer Bal Diwas (26 December), a day that honours the martyrdom of the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh.
Background
The award was instituted in 2018 when the government merged the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement and the National Child Welfare Award. It is now the highest civilian honour for Indian children. Since the first ceremony in 2019 the award has recognised over two hundred children for achievements in academics, innovation, social service, arts, culture, sports and bravery. By linking the ceremony to Veer Bal Diwas, the government seeks to inspire children with stories of courage and sacrifice from Sikh history.
Eligibility and nomination process
- Age and citizenship: Nominees must be Indian citizens aged between five and eighteen years as of 31 July 2026.
- Achievement window: Achievements should have occurred within two years of the nomination deadline. Past recipients are not eligible again.
- Categories: Awards are given for bravery, social service, environmental conservation, sports, art and culture, innovation and science & technology. A child may be nominated in more than one category but can receive the award in only one.
- Selection: A national committee headed by the Minister for Women and Child Development shortlists candidates and the President approves the final list. The award includes a medal, certificate and citation.
Conclusion
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar celebrates exceptional achievements of young Indians and encourages others to dream big. By recognising bravery, creativity and service, the award nurtures values of courage, innovation and compassion in the next generation.
