Why in news?
The Union government unveiled the Dhan‑Dhaanya Krishi Yojana to raise agricultural productivity in backward districts. The announcement on 17 July 2025 drew attention to its design.
Programme design
- Duration and coverage: A six‑year mission starting from the 2025‑26 fiscal year, targeting 100 low‑performing districts. At least one district from every state will be included, chosen on the basis of low cropping intensity and agricultural credit flow.
- Integrated planning: District Dhan‑Dhaanya Samitis headed by the district magistrate will prepare agricultural and allied plans focusing on crop diversification, improved seeds, irrigation, mechanisation and post‑harvest infrastructure.
- Convergence of schemes: Thirty‑six schemes spanning 11 ministries, including agriculture, water resources, fertilisers and food processing, will be combined with state initiatives to avoid duplication.
- Monitoring: A digital dashboard will track progress against 117 indicators, and NITI Aayog will conduct regular reviews.
Expected impact
- Boost agricultural productivity and farmers’ income in lagging districts.
- Create value chains through better storage, processing and marketing facilities.
- Encourage sustainable practices like water conservation, soil health management and natural farming.
- Align with national goals such as the Viksit Bharat vision for 2047.
