Why in news?
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated the 16th raising day of Project BRAHMANK on 29 June 2026. The project oversees construction and maintenance of strategic roads in remote districts of Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring areas. The event highlighted progress made in improving connectivity for armed forces and local communities.
Background
Project BRAHMANK was created by the BRO on 29 June 2011 and began operations on 3 December 2011. Its headquarters are at Ranaghat. The project covers the districts of Siang, East Siang, West Siang, Upper Siang and Shi‑Yomi in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Dhemaji district in Assam. The region is mountainous and shares long borders with China; all‑weather roads are vital for national security and for the development of remote villages.
Achievements
- Road network: The project maintains over 800 kilometres of roads and has built key bridges across rivers and deep gorges. Many roads have been upgraded to double‑lane standards.
- Bridges: Thirteen new bridges were completed in recent years to improve year‑round mobility for the armed forces and civilians.
- Support to villages: Better roads help farmers transport produce to markets and enable access to schools, hospitals and emergency services.
- Environmental care: The BRO conducts tree plantation and slope stabilization to reduce erosion in this fragile Himalayan region.
Conclusion
Project BRAHMANK underscores the strategic importance of road infrastructure in border areas. Continued funding and technical upgrades are necessary to complete remaining stretches, maintain existing roads and provide safe travel for defence personnel and local residents.
