Why in news?
On 16 August 2025 the Chief Minister of Punjab launched a reward policy to encourage police officers who make major drug seizures. The programme is part of a larger campaign called Yudh Nasheyan Virudh (War Against Drugs), reflecting the state’s determination to dismantle the drug mafia and curb addiction.
Key initiatives
- Reward policy: Police officers who recover more than one kilogram of heroin will receive a cash reward of ₹1.2 lakh.
- School awareness: An anti‑drug syllabus has been introduced, and a mega parent–teacher meeting involving millions of parents and students aims to spread awareness.
- Community action: Villages are encouraged to pass resolutions declaring themselves drug‑free.
- Defence committees: Local committees have been formed to monitor and report suspicious activities.
- Youth engagement: New sports initiatives and stadiums seek to channel young people’s energy away from drugs.
Relevance in the UPSC syllabus
- GS II – Governance: Examines state‑level initiatives to combat social evils and improve public health.
- GS III – Internal security: Addresses cross‑border smuggling and organised crime.
- GS IV – Ethics: Highlights leadership, integrity and the ethical challenges of confronting entrenched mafias.
Conclusion
Punitive measures alone cannot solve Punjab’s drug crisis. The success of the campaign will depend on sustained law enforcement, prevention through education and community engagement that offers constructive alternatives to the state’s youth.
