Why in news?
The Border Security Force (BSF) announced that it had successfully tested drones equipped with radar systems to monitor India’s borders. Developed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), these drones are expected to enhance surveillance in all weather conditions.
Technology and capabilities
- Miniature radars: Small, lightweight radars mounted on drones can detect movement of people, vehicles and boats across challenging terrain. The radars send real‑time data to command centres.
- All‑weather monitoring: Unlike optical cameras, radars can “see” through fog, rain and darkness. This enables round‑the‑clock surveillance.
- Sensor fusion: The drone platform integrates radar data with inputs from infrared cameras and ground sensors, providing a comprehensive picture of border activity.
- Local production: The BSF’s academy in Tekanpur is indigenously producing these radar‑equipped drones, reducing reliance on imports and tailoring designs to Indian conditions.
Impact on border security
The drones will help detect infiltrators, smugglers and illegal fishing boats in remote areas that are difficult for foot patrols to access. Real‑time alerts will allow security forces to respond quickly, reducing manpower requirements and risks to personnel. Beyond borders, the technology could be adapted for disaster management, coastal monitoring and wildlife protection.
