Why in news?

On 26 June 2026 a one‑tonne consignment of GI‑tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from Madhya Pradesh was airlifted to the United Arab Emirates. APEDA facilitated this first commercial export, and farmers received up to ₹150 per kilogram—about 50 percent more than the local price. The export aims to showcase this unique mango variety to overseas markets and boost growers’ incomes.

Background

The Rewa Sundarja mango originates from orchards around the town of Rewa in central India. Its thin skin, sweet pulp and small stone have made it a regional delicacy for generations. To protect its heritage and ensure fair returns to growers, the variety received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2022. APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) has been working with farmer producer companies to improve packaging and compliance so that the fruit can meet international standards.

Key details of the export

  • Consignment: A one‑tonne batch was sourced from local farmers’ groups and shipped from Varanasi to the UAE.
  • Price premium: Growers received around ₹150 per kilogram, whereas the domestic market price is ₹100–110. This premium reflects the fruit’s GI status and export quality.
  • APEDA’s role: The agency provided training on harvesting, grading and packaging. It also helped with customs clearances and buyer connections.
  • Potential impact: Regular exports could expand the market for Rewa Sundarja and encourage orchardists to plant more trees. Higher income may also incentivise farmers to adopt good agricultural practices.
  • Cultural value: The mango carries local cultural significance in Rewa. GI recognition preserves its identity and links farmers to their heritage.

Conclusion

The maiden export of Rewa Sundarja mangoes highlights the benefits of GI protection. With proper support, traditional horticultural varieties can reach global buyers and bring prosperity to small growers.
