Why in news?
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) launched SACHET (System for Aid, Coordination and Holistic Early‑warning Tracking) in early October 2025. This national platform and mobile app disseminate official disaster warnings through multiple channels and aim to provide real‑time, location‑specific alerts for hazards such as floods, cyclones, lightning and earthquakes.
Background
India experiences frequent natural disasters, and timely warnings can save lives. SACHET is part of the government’s adoption of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), a global standard that allows alerts to be issued across different systems. Conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the platform integrates inputs from agencies like the Indian Meteorological Department, the Central Water Commission and the National Centre for Seismology. It is accessible via a web portal (sachet.ndma.gov.in) and an Android/iOS app.
Key features
- Multi‑channel dissemination: Official alerts are delivered through SMS, cell broadcast, in‑app notifications, email, browser pop‑ups and RSS feeds. Integration with Google and Apple platforms ensures that users receive alerts on smartphones and wearable devices even when they are not actively using the app.
- Geo‑targeted warnings: SACHET uses GPS and cell‑tower triangulation to send alerts relevant to a user’s current location. Users can also subscribe to warnings for other places where family members or property are located and select the types of hazards they wish to monitor.
- Common Alerting Protocol compliance: All messages follow the CAP format, enabling interoperability between government agencies, media outlets and international alert systems. This uniform structure improves reliability and reduces confusion during emergencies.
- Accessibility and inclusivity: Alerts are available in twelve Indian languages. The app includes read‑out‑loud functions for visually impaired users and provides simple lists of “Do’s and Don’ts” tailored to each type of disaster. Daily weather forecasts and educational resources help users stay prepared.
- Significance: By centralising official warnings and ensuring they reach people quickly, SACHET aims to reduce casualties, property damage and panic during disasters. It also promotes trust in government communications and encourages citizens to act on verified information rather than rumours.
