September 15, 2025 1 min read

Why in news?

The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Trikand visited Salamis Bay in Greece to participate in the first bilateral maritime exercise between India and Greece. The exercise aims to enhance interoperability and deepen defence cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

About Salamis Bay

Salamis Bay lies on the western coast of Salamis Island in the Aegean Sea, about 16 km from Athens. The bay is connected to the Saronic Gulf and stretches roughly 9 km. Cape Petriti forms its southwestern end.

Historical significance

In 480 BCE, the bay was the site of the famous Battle of Salamis, in which a coalition of Greek city‑states defeated the invading Persian navy. The victory preserved Greek civilisation and is considered a turning point in world history. Today Salamis Island retains ruins of ancient shipyards and remains an important naval base for Greece.

Contemporary relevance

India–Greece defence ties have grown in recent years. Joint exercises enhance naval cooperation, promote maritime security and strengthen India’s outreach to the Mediterranean region. Mapping Salamis Bay also aids aspirants in understanding global maritime geography and ancient battles, which often feature in General Studies questions.
