Why in news?
On 9 September 2025 India’s Defence Minister virtually flagged off “Samudra Pradakshina” from Mumbai’s Gateway of India. This expedition will see an all‑women tri‑service team sail around the globe on the Indian Army Sailing Vessel Triveni.
What is Samudra Pradakshina?
It is India’s first circumnavigation expedition jointly led by the Army, Navy and Air Force and crewed entirely by women officers. The team will sail more than 26,000 nautical miles, crossing the Equator twice and rounding the capes of Leeuwin, Horn and Good Hope.
Historical context
India has a growing tradition of challenging ocean voyages: Captain Dilip Donde completed the country’s first solo circumnavigation in 2009–10, Commander Abhilash Tomy achieved a non‑stop solo voyage in 2012–13, and the INSV Tarini carried an all‑women Navy crew around the world in 2017–18. Samudra Pradakshina builds on these achievements and reflects increased jointness in the armed forces.
Purpose and significance
- Symbol of women’s empowerment: The voyage showcases the courage and professionalism of women in uniform, promoting gender inclusion in defence services.
- Jointness and training: By combining the expertise of all three services, the expedition fosters synergy and strengthens maritime capability.
- Scientific research and diplomacy: Crew members will collaborate with the National Institute of Oceanography to study micro‑plastics and ocean biodiversity, and port calls will serve as platforms for cultural exchange and military diplomacy.
- Atmanirbhar Bharat: The 50‑foot yacht Triveni was built in Puducherry, highlighting indigenous shipbuilding.
