Why in news?
The Ministry of Tourism released operational guidelines for the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres (SASCI) scheme in July 2025. The initiative aims to transform selected tourist sites into world‑class destinations by 2026.
What is SASCI?
- SASCI is a centrally funded programme designed to upgrade iconic Indian tourist destinations through capital investment, innovation and rigorous planning.
- It is implemented by the Ministry of Tourism, with projects proposed and managed by state governments.
- Selected projects must be completed within a 24‑month window from approval.
Key features
- Comprehensive development: Focuses on physical infrastructure (roads, sanitation), high‑quality tourism services and immersive visitor experiences.
- State‑led execution: States identify priority sites and execute projects, while the Centre provides financial assistance.
- Value‑chain strengthening: Emphasises connectivity, ecological sustainability, carrying‑capacity studies, branding and operational management.
- Digital promotion: Completed sites will be marketed through domestic and global campaigns, including social media and tourism fairs.
Significance
- By upgrading tourist sites, SASCI aims to boost local employment, spur allied industries and increase tourist footfall.
- Improved facilities and sustainability measures will enhance India’s image as a culturally rich yet visitor‑friendly destination.
- The scheme encourages cooperative federalism by empowering states to innovate while providing them with central support.
Transforming tourist hubs into world‑class destinations can promote inclusive growth and preserve heritage if executed transparently and sustainably.
