Why in news?
The National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) has been renamed the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development, with a new regional centre being established in Ranchi.
About the institute
- Role: An autonomous body under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, it serves as the apex training and research institute for women’s and children’s welfare.
- Legacy and centres: Renamed to honour social reformer Savitribai Phule, the institute’s headquarters is in New Delhi with existing centres in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Lucknow, Indore and Mohali; the new centre in Ranchi will serve eastern India.
- Objectives: Build capacity for implementing schemes like Mission Shakti, Vatsalya, Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
- Functions: Provides training and induction for frontline workers; conducts research and develops context‑specific interventions; offers policy advice and evidence‑based inputs; documents best practices and delivers diplomas in child guidance and counselling.
- Significance: Decentralises capacity‑building to underserved regions, empowers local governance bodies and integrates mental health, education and nutrition for holistic welfare.
