A nature photographer recently spotted and photographed a Spot‑bellied Eagle‑Owl in Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. The rare sighting of this elusive bird has generated excitement among birdwatchers and highlighted the importance of preserving forest habitats.
Background
The Spot‑bellied Eagle‑Owl (Bubo nipalensis) is a large nocturnal raptor found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia. It grows to about 50–60 cm long and weighs up to 2 kg. The owl has distinctive dark brown and cream plumage with spots on its belly. Its deep orange eyes and ear tufts give it a fierce appearance.
Significance of the sighting
- The species is rarely seen because it is shy and active mainly at night. Documenting its presence indicates a healthy forest ecosystem with abundant prey such as small mammals, reptiles and birds.
