Why in news?
On 5 June 2026 STPI, an autonomous society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, organised Tech Summit 2026 to mark its 35th foundation day. The event showcased India’s growing digital economy and the role of STPI in nurturing start‑ups and software exports.
Background
The Software Technology Parks of India was set up in 1991 to boost software exports and provide world‑class infrastructure to information technology firms. It manages the Software Technology Parks (STP) and Electronic Hardware Technology Parks (EHTP) schemes that offer single‑window clearance, duty‑free import of equipment and other incentives. STPI operates around 70 centres across the country, many in tier‑II and tier‑III towns, and provides high‑speed data communication links through its SoftNET network. Over the years STPI has also established incubation facilities and Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, fintech and blockchain, helping start‑ups develop products for global markets.
Highlights of Tech Summit 2026
- Celebration of success: The summit celebrated STPI’s contribution to transforming India into the world’s leading outsourcing destination. Officials noted that over 1,700 start‑ups have been incubated through STPI centres and CoEs.
- Digital public infrastructure: Speakers emphasised initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission, the India Semiconductor Mission and the Digital India programme, which aim to build robust digital public infrastructure and promote research in frontier technologies.
- Emerging technologies: Sessions discussed opportunities in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity and space technology. The summit highlighted the need to build domestic capabilities in these areas to reduce reliance on imports.
- Regional outreach: STPI continues to expand operations to smaller cities so that start‑ups outside major metros can access high‑quality facilities, mentoring and market connections.
- Policy support: Industry leaders called for streamlined regulations, investments in R & D and partnerships between academia and industry to strengthen the technology ecosystem.

- Single‑window approvals: Under the STP/EHTP schemes, companies can obtain customs and excise clearances and access duty‑free imports through STPI’s single‑window mechanism.
- High‑speed connectivity: SoftNET, the satellite‑based data communication network, provides reliable international connectivity required for exporting software services.
- Incubation and mentoring: CoEs mentor start‑ups in emerging sectors, providing access to domain experts, investors and global markets.
- Consultancy: STPI advises state governments on setting up IT parks and promoting electronic hardware manufacturing.
