Why in news?

On 6 May 2026 the Union Health Minister launched the Swasth Bharat Portal at the tenth National Summit on Good, Replicable Practices and Innovations in Public Health. This unified platform aims to integrate numerous digital health programmes under one roof to reduce data duplication and improve decision‑making.

Background

India’s public health system operates dozens of digital platforms to monitor programmes such as immunisation, tuberculosis control and maternal health. Because these systems were built separately, health workers often enter the same data multiple times, leading to errors and fragmented information. The Swasth Bharat Portal was conceived to create a federated architecture that connects existing databases via application programming interfaces (APIs). The portal aligns with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and leverages unique health IDs known as ABHA numbers for secure record exchange.

Key features

  • Unified access: Health workers use a single login to access multiple programme dashboards instead of switching between separate applications. This reduces the administrative burden and improves data consistency.
  • API‑based integration: The portal connects existing health systems through secure APIs. Data entered in one programme automatically populates related records, reducing duplicate entries and streamlining reporting.
  • ABHA and national registries: By linking with ABHA numbers and national registries such as the Health Facility Registry and Healthcare Professionals Registry, the platform ensures that patient records are traceable across facilities.
  • Data dashboards and analytics: Real‑time dashboards support data‑driven decisions at local, state and national levels. The portal reduces infrastructure costs by 20–30% and aims to lower data duplication by up to 40%.

Significance

The Swasth Bharat Portal marks a shift from siloed digital tools to an integrated health information system. Unified data improve disease surveillance, resource allocation and policy planning. For field staff, a single interface saves time and ensures accurate patient tracking. Connecting with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission also paves the way for personalised health records and telemedicine services. In a vast country like India, where millions rely on government health programmes, such integration can make healthcare delivery more efficient and equitable.
