Why in news?

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs informed Parliament that the Swasthya portal, an online repository on tribal health and nutrition, does not collect real‑time district‑wise health data and there are no immediate plans to integrate it with national health databases or artificial‑intelligence analytics. Questions were raised about the portal’s utilisation and impact during the winter session.

Background

Developed under the “Tribal Research Information Education Communication and Events” scheme, the Swasthya portal (swasthya.tribal.gov.in) is hosted by the National Informatics Centre. The aim is to bridge knowledge gaps by compiling data on tribal health, nutrition, traditional medicines and government initiatives. It draws information from ministries, research institutions, non‑governmental organisations and civil society.

Purpose and content

  • Data repository: The portal curates information on health indicators, nutrition statistics, disease profiles and tribal health programmes. It summarises findings from national surveys like the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) and District Level Household Surveys (DLHS).
  • Knowledge sharing: Through articles, case studies and best practices, the site shares lessons on addressing tribal health challenges, including maternal and child health, communicable diseases and traditional healing practices.
  • Sickle Cell Disease support: A dedicated section provides information on diagnosis and management of sickle cell anaemia, which disproportionately affects tribal populations. It also links to the ALEKH e‑newsletter and a Tribal Health Compendium.
  • Platform for research: By offering a central space for policy makers, scholars and NGOs, the portal encourages evidence‑based decision‑making on tribal health.

Issues and clarifications

  • The portal is not designed for real‑time monitoring; health remains a state subject, and most data collection falls under state health departments.
  • No assessment has been undertaken so far to gauge the portal’s usage or impact. Officials emphasise that its primary function is knowledge dissemination rather than service delivery.
  • Integrating national health databases or artificial intelligence tools would require significant resources and coordination across ministries. There are currently no plans to pursue such integration.

Conclusion

The Swasthya portal is a valuable platform for consolidating information on tribal health and nutrition. To enhance its usefulness, regular updates and feedback from community health workers, researchers and policy makers are essential. Although it cannot replace real‑time health monitoring systems, it serves as a stepping stone towards better informed policies for tribal wellbeing.
