Why in news?

On 29 June 2026 the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the Unified Health Interface, an interoperable digital network under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. UHI allows patients and healthcare providers to connect across different digital platforms without being tied to a single application. It is likened to the health sector’s version of the Unified Payments Interface.

Background

India’s digital health ecosystem has grown rapidly, but it remains fragmented. Patients and providers often must use the same app or portal to access services, which limits choice and excludes smaller clinics. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) seeks to build a unified digital infrastructure. UHI is the service layer of ABDM. It uses open protocols and common technical standards to enable interoperability across health applications. Development and maintenance of the core UHI Gateway is handled by the National Health Authority (NHA).

How UHI works

  • Open protocols: UHI uses open specifications. When a citizen searches for a health service using a UHI‑enabled application, the request goes through the Gateway to registered providers. Providers respond through the same network, allowing bookings and communication without both parties using the same app.
  • Building blocks: The network leverages ABDM components such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) for patient identity, the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) and Health Facility Registry (HFR) for provider verification and the Health Information Exchange for consent‑based data sharing.
  • Current services: At launch, UHI allows users to check real‑time blood availability through e‑RaktKosh, find PMJAY empanelled hospitals, locate Jan Aushadhi pharmacies, discover and book ambulances and schedule in‑person doctor consultations.
  • Expansion plans: The NHA plans to add lab diagnostics discovery, vaccination slot booking, pharmacy discovery and integration with major government health programmes. The long‑term vision is a nationwide open health infrastructure where any citizen can access verified services and any provider can reach patients regardless of platform.

Objectives and benefits

  • Interoperability: Citizens and providers can use any UHI‑enabled platform. This removes dependency on a single app and increases choice.
  • Fair discoverability: All verified doctors, clinics and diagnostic centres have an equal chance of being found. This helps small providers connect with patients.
  • Verification and trust: Only providers credentialed through the ABDM registries can participate. This safeguards users from unverified practitioners.
  • Open innovation: Because UHI is built on open protocols, developers can build health applications in any language on any device. This encourages innovation and local language solutions.
  • Improved access: By bringing verified services onto a single network, UHI particularly benefits rural and semi‑urban populations who previously relied on informal channels for care.

Conclusion

The Unified Health Interface marks a shift towards an open digital health ecosystem in India. By connecting patients and providers across platforms and ensuring verification, UHI promises more accessible, transparent and patient‑centric healthcare. As additional services are added, it could transform how citizens discover and use health services.
