Why in news?
The United Nations Environment Programme announced the 2025 winners of its Young Champions of the Earth award. The award recognises innovative environmental entrepreneurs under 30 and provides seed funding and mentorship.
The award
- Launched in 2017, the Young Champions of the Earth award celebrates young people from seven global regions who have bold solutions to pressing environmental challenges.
- Each winner receives US$ 20,000 in seed funding, mentorship, publicity and access to a network of experts.
2025 winners
- Jinali Mody (India): Founder of Banofi Leather, which produces vegan leather from banana stem waste. The project reduces agricultural waste and offers farmers a new income stream.
- Joseph Nguthiru (Kenya): Creator of HyaPak, converting invasive water hyacinth into biodegradable packaging. This tackles water pollution and offers alternative livelihoods.
- Noemi Florea (United States): Developer of Cycleau, a compact greywater recycling system for households. It helps conserve water and reduces household water bills.
