Why in news?
On 6 October 2025 UNESCO’s Executive Board elected Khaled El‑Enany of Egypt as the organisation’s Director‑General. He will succeed Audrey Azoulay when her term ends.
About Khaled El‑Enany
El‑Enany previously served as Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. He is an Egyptologist and has led major archaeological projects, including the Grand Egyptian Museum. As head of UNESCO he will oversee programmes in education, science, culture and communication.
Significance of the election
- El‑Enany’s appointment marks the first time an Arab and African candidate will lead UNESCO in over three decades. This reflects growing recognition of the Global South’s contributions to cultural heritage and education.
- UNESCO faces challenges such as protecting heritage in conflict zones, bridging the digital divide and countering misinformation. The new Director‑General is expected to prioritise inclusive education, cultural preservation and climate action.
- The election also signals renewed engagement between UNESCO and member states, with the United States returning as a full member in 2023 after a period of withdrawal.
