Why in news?
On 26 December 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a national programme at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to commemorate Veer Bal Diwas. The day marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, who chose death over conversion to Islam in 1704. During the event the Prime Minister honoured 20 recipients of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar and urged the youth to draw inspiration from the courage of the Sahibzadas.
Background
Veer Bal Diwas was instituted by the Government of India in 2022 to remember the supreme sacrifice of the two young sons of the tenth Sikh Guru. In December 1704, the Mughal governor Wazir Khan ordered the boys, then aged nine and seven, to convert or face execution. Refusing to abandon their faith, they were bricked alive in the walls of Sirhind Fort. Their martyrdom is commemorated by Sikhs around the world as a testament to steadfastness and moral courage.
