Why in news?
Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, launched the first phase of the Viksit Vibrant Village Program 2026 on 3 June 2026. The programme has deployed 500 youth volunteers in border villages of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to engage with local communities and promote national integration.
Background
The Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) was approved in February 2023 to develop 662 villages along India’s northern border (VVP‑I). It aims to improve road connectivity, housing, telecom networks, renewable energy and livelihood opportunities so that residents remain in these strategic areas. The programme was expanded as VVP‑II in April 2025 to cover 1,954 villages along other international land borders across 17 states and union territories. VVP‑II has an outlay of ₹6,839 crore for 2025–29 and focuses on saturating villages with roads, electricity, telecom and television services, as well as promoting tourism, skill development and agricultural value chains.
Features of the 2026 youth initiative
- Volunteer selection: 500 MY Bharat volunteers were chosen through a nationwide online quiz that attracted over three lakh participants. They represent all states and union territories.
- Two‑phase deployment: In the first phase, 250 volunteers are stationed in 43 villages; the remaining 250 volunteers will be placed in 50 more villages later in June. Each volunteer spends a week living with families in a border village.
- Thematic engagement: Activities revolve around border awareness, cultural exchange, community living, governance, socio‑economic assessment, village development planning and volunteerism. Volunteers conduct household surveys, take part in Gram Sabha meetings and support cleanliness drives.
- Nation First Challenge: Volunteers promote a campaign encouraging people to adopt swadeshi (made‑in‑India) products, healthy cooking practices, public transport and fuel conservation, natural farming and local tourism. These themes aim to foster responsible citizenship and sustainable living.
- Multi‑agency coordination: The programme is implemented with support from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police. Control rooms, nodal officers and village action plans ensure smooth logistics and effective engagement.
