Why in news?

During “Operation White Hammer” on 11–12 March 2026, India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) raided a clandestine facility in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district and seized 237 kilograms of alprazolam along with 3.5 tonnes of precursor chemicals. The factory had been illegally manufacturing the psychoactive drug under the guise of a chemical plant.

Background

Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine drug commonly prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders. It enhances the effect of gamma‑aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that calms nerve activity in the brain, producing sedative and anxiolytic effects. Because of its potential for abuse and dependence, alprazolam is listed as a controlled substance under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Medical uses and risks

  • Therapeutic use: Doctors prescribe alprazolam for generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Off‑label uses include treating insomnia and premenstrual syndrome.
  • Mechanism: The drug binds to GABA‑A receptors in the brain, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA. This leads to sedation, muscle relaxation and reduced anxiety.
  • Side‑effects: Drowsiness, dizziness and impaired coordination are common. Combining alprazolam with alcohol or other depressants can cause serious breathing problems or coma. Long‑term use can lead to tolerance and dependence; abrupt cessation may trigger withdrawal symptoms such as seizures.
  • Regulation: Alprazolam is classified as a prescription drug and psychotropic substance. Manufacturing, sale and possession without a licence are illegal under the NDPS Act.

Implications of the seizure

  • Drug enforcement: The bust underscores the DRI’s vigilance against clandestine drug labs. Alprazolam is sometimes diverted for recreational use or to adulterate illicit substances. Large seizures help disrupt supply chains.
  • Public health: Awareness about the dangers of misusing prescription medicines is essential. People should only take alprazolam under medical supervision and never share or buy it illegally.
