Why in news?
Researchers conducting a biodiversity survey in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh reported finding a bright yellow puffball mushroom on 4 June 2026. Preliminary analysis suggested it belongs to the species Bovista colorata, also known as the golden puffball.
Background
Bovista is a genus of puffball fungi. These saprobes grow on soil or decaying organic matter and are characterised by their ball‑shaped fruiting bodies that release clouds of spores when mature. Puffballs have been used in folk medicine, and a single giant puffball can produce trillions of spores. The species Bovista colorata was first described in 1878 and is rare, distinguished by its vivid yellow to orange coloration.
Discovery and features
- Field observation: The specimen was found in Zedua village on forest soil. Its spherical fruiting body measured about 20 cm in diameter and had a thick yellow peridium (outer skin).
- Identification: Researchers tentatively identified it as Bovista colorata based on macroscopic features such as colour, texture and shape. Microscopic analysis of spores and tissue sections is planned to confirm the species.
- Ecological significance: The find highlights the under‑explored fungal diversity of the Eastern Himalayas. Puffballs play an important ecological role by decomposing dead plant matter and recycling nutrients.
- Human uses: While some puffballs are edible when young, others may be inedible or toxic. Indigenous communities use puffball spores as a styptic to stop bleeding and for medicinal purposes. Scientific research on Bovista colorata remains limited.
