Why in News?
Bhavani Island, a popular tourism spot on the Krishna River near Vijayawada, was shut down twice in 2025 due to flooding caused by heavy rains and high inflow at the Prakasam Barrage. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation reported that prolonged closures have resulted in revenue losses of around ₹1.8 crore. The island’s boating and hospitality services were suspended for more than 60 days during the festive season.
Background
Bhavani Island is situated on a 133‑acre sandbank downstream of the Prakasam Barrage in Andhra Pradesh. Developed by the state tourism department, it features cottages, a ropeway, water‑sports facilities and lush gardens. The island attracts thousands of visitors, especially during the Hindu month of Karthika Masam, when families perform rituals and picnics. Revenue from boating, room rentals and food services contributes significantly to local livelihoods.
Impacts of the flooding
- Loss of income: Officials estimate that the closure during peak months led to daily losses of around ₹2 lakh. The cumulative revenue shortfall reached about ₹1.8 crore by October 2025.
- Safety concerns: High water levels and strong currents posed risks to boats and infrastructure. Authorities suspended all activities until water levels receded and conducted repairs on jetties and walkways.
- Effect on local economy: Vendors, ferrymen and hospitality workers reliant on tourism faced reduced earnings. Some workers sought alternative employment during the shutdown.
Looking ahead
- Disaster preparedness: Officials plan to install early warning systems and flood‑resilient infrastructure to reduce closures in future monsoon seasons.
- Diversification of attractions: Developing cultural programmes, nature trails and off‑season activities could help sustain visitor interest when boating is unavailable.
- Community support: Compensation and loan support for workers during closures can cushion the economic impact on local households.
