Why in news?

In late June 2026 the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board opened several floodgates of the Himayat Sagar reservoir. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area raised water levels, prompting the release of about 1,000 cusecs to prevent overtopping. Authorities issued alerts for low‑lying areas downstream and began continuous monitoring of the lake’s inflows and outflows.

Background

Himayat Sagar is an artificial lake located about 20 km southwest of Hyderabad. It was built between 1920 and 1927 by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, after the devastating Musi flood of 1908. Engineers constructed a 2.255‑km masonry dam across the Esi River, a tributary of the Musi. The project aimed to supply drinking water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad and to protect the cities from future floods. The reservoir was named after the Nizam’s son Himayat Ali Khan. Along with its larger twin, Osman Sagar (Gandipet), the lake has served as a lifeline for the twin cities for almost a century.

Features and history

  • Engineering: The dam is about 33.8 m high and has 17 gates. The original storage capacity was around 4.25 Tmc ft, though siltation has reduced it to roughly 2.97 Tmc ft today.
  • Surface area: The reservoir spreads over roughly 1,700 acres and lies parallel to Osman Sagar. The two lakes collectively safeguard Hyderabad from flooding and supply water to millions of residents.
  • Historical context: The lakes were built in response to the 1908 floods that inundated Hyderabad and killed thousands. Construction began in 1920 and finished in 1927. The dams were designed under engineer Khaja Mohinuddin.
  • Ecological and recreational value: The lake and its surrounding hills provide habitats for birds and wildlife. Scenic views make it a popular spot for boating, picnicking and bird‑watching. Conservationists have campaigned to protect the reservoir from encroachment and pollution.

Significance of the recent release

  • Flood management: Opening the gates helps maintain safe water levels and prevents pressure on the dam. It also reduces the risk of sudden, uncontrolled floods downstream.
  • Water supply: Himayat Sagar remains one of the main sources of drinking water for Hyderabad. Managing inflows and outflows ensures reliable supply during the monsoon season.
  • Heritage conservation: As one of India’s oldest flood‑control structures, the lake is part of Hyderabad’s engineering heritage. The recent incident highlights the need for routine maintenance, desiltation and protection from urban encroachment.

Conclusion

Himayat Sagar stands as a testament to Hyderabad’s resilience. Built after a catastrophic flood, it has supplied water and protected the city for nearly a century. The controlled release of water in June 2026 shows that thoughtful engineering and proactive management continue to be vital for urban safety. Preserving the lake’s capacity through desiltation and preventing encroachment will ensure that this historic reservoir remains functional for generations.
