Why in news?

The sixth round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Azerbaijan was held in Baku on 3 April 2026. Senior officials reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, tourism and pharmaceuticals, and discussed regional security issues.

Background

India and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in 1992. Azerbaijan is an energy‑rich nation in the South Caucasus; India imports crude oil and liquefied natural gas from the country, while exporting pharmaceuticals, textiles and tea. The two countries hold Foreign Office Consultations periodically to coordinate policies and explore new avenues of cooperation.

Outcomes of the sixth round

  • The Indian delegation, led by Secretary (West) Sibi George, met Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov in Baku. Discussions focused on boosting trade and investment, cooperation in digital technology, tourism promotion and expansion of education exchanges.
  • Both sides agreed to intensify collaboration against cross‑border terrorism and explore opportunities in renewable energy and connectivity projects such as the International North‑South Transport Corridor.
  • Azerbaijan offered support for evacuating Indian citizens from conflict zones in West Asia, reflecting mutual goodwill.

Significance

  • The consultations reaffirm India’s engagement with the South Caucasus and open up opportunities to diversify energy sources.
  • They provide a platform to address regional security concerns and deepen people‑to‑people and cultural ties.
