Why in news?
The Mayon stratovolcano in the Philippines erupted in early May 2026, prompting authorities to raise the alert level and evacuate nearby residents. Ashfall affected communities and flights were warned to avoid the area.
Background
Mayon, located on the island of Luzon near Legazpi City, is famous for its almost perfect conical shape. It is one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes.
- Specifications: Mayon rises about 2,462 metres above sea level. It has erupted more than 30 times since recorded history began in 1616.
- Recent eruption: in May 2026 the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level to 3 (on a 0–5 scale) after lava and ash emissions. Thousands of people were evacuated from a 6–kilometre danger zone.
- Historical eruptions: in 1814 a major eruption buried the town of Cagsawa and killed around 1,200 people; the 1993 eruption killed 79 villagers; more recent eruptions occurred in 2000, 2006, 2010 and 2014, causing evacuations but fewer casualties thanks to improved monitoring.
- Importance: Mayon is a national park and tourist attraction. Its slopes support agriculture and communities, but its frequent eruptions require constant vigilance and evacuation plans.
