Why in news?

A tourist speedboat capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on 11 July 2026. Fifteen Indian tourists died, and Vietnamese police later detained the captain for investigation. Twenty-one people survived. Rough seas were reported, but the final cause remained unconfirmed.

Background

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island, and it lies in the Gulf of Thailand, near Vietnam’s south-western coast.

The island is geographically closer to Cambodia than mainland Vietnam, but it remains under Vietnamese sovereignty.

Phu Quoc became Vietnam’s first island city in 2020. A national administrative reform changed its status again in 2025.

It is now the Phu Quoc special zone within An Giang province. Older books may still place it in Kien Giang province.

Current administrative position: Phu Quoc belongs to An Giang province after the 2025 reform. Kien Giang is the older classification.

What happened to the tourist boat?

The speedboat overturned near Hon May Rut Ngoai, south of the main island, and it carried 36 people.

  • Thirty-two passengers were Indian tourists.
  • Four Vietnamese crew members or personnel were also aboard.
  • Fifteen Indian tourists lost their lives.
  • Twenty-one people survived the accident.
  • Vietnamese authorities opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

Reports mentioned strong waves and difficult sea conditions, and investigators must still determine responsibility and the exact sequence of events.

Legal caution: A captain’s detention does not itself prove guilt. The investigation must establish the final cause and any violations.

Location and physical geography

  • The main island covers about 575 square kilometres.
  • It stretches roughly 50 kilometres from north to south.
  • Its terrain includes low mountains, forests, streams and beaches.
  • Mount Chua is its highest point, at about 603 metres.
  • Phu Quoc National Park protects much of the north and north-east.

Checked height: Mount Chua rises about 603 metres, and some secondary accounts incorrectly give a height of 630 metres.

Climate and natural setting

Phu Quoc has a tropical monsoon climate, and the drier season generally lasts from November to April.

The wetter season usually extends from May to October, and storms and rough seas can disrupt tourism during this period.

The island has coral reefs, seagrass beds and tropical forests, and these ecosystems support fisheries and coastal biodiversity.

Is the whole island part of a global biosphere reserve?

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recognised the wider Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve in 2006.

That reserve includes Phu Quoc and other marine and coastal areas, and Phu Quoc National Park is only one component.

Therefore, the national park and biosphere reserve are not identical areas, and their legal origins and boundaries also differ.

Why is Phu Quoc important?

  • Tourism: Beaches, diving and resorts attract domestic and international visitors.
  • Fish sauce: The island is famous for traditionally fermented fish sauce.
  • Pepper: Farms produce a well-known local pepper variety.
  • Fisheries: Coastal waters support fishing and seafood-based livelihoods.
  • Strategy: Its location gives Vietnam an important presence in the Gulf of Thailand.

Map fact: Phu Quoc lies in the Gulf of Thailand, not the South China Sea. It is near Cambodia but belongs to Vietnam.

Conclusion

The boat tragedy highlights the safety risks of monsoon-season marine tourism. Phu Quoc also remains important for geography, biodiversity, trade and regional strategy.
