Why in news? On 13 October 2025, President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a three‑day visit to Gujarat during which she offered prayers at the historic Somnath temple and toured Gir National Park. Her itinerary underscored themes of cultural heritage, tribal welfare and environmental stewardship.

Background

Somnath temple in Gujarat is revered as the first of India’s twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Destroyed and rebuilt several times over centuries, the temple symbolises resilience and faith. Gir National Park, meanwhile, is the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion and also home to Maldhari and Siddi tribal communities whose livelihoods depend on the forest.
