Why in news? On 13 October 2025, President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a three‑day visit to Gujarat during which she offered prayers at the historic Somnath temple and toured Gir National Park. Her itinerary underscored themes of cultural heritage, tribal welfare and environmental stewardship.
Background
Somnath temple in Gujarat is revered as the first of India’s twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Destroyed and rebuilt several times over centuries, the temple symbolises resilience and faith. Gir National Park, meanwhile, is the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion and also home to Maldhari and Siddi tribal communities whose livelihoods depend on the forest.
Highlights of the visit
- Pilgrimage and prayer: The President offered prayers at Somnath temple, paying homage to its history and architecture. She visited its museum and emphasised preserving India’s spiritual heritage.
- Meeting tribal communities: At Gir, she interacted with members of the Siddi, Maldhari and other tribal groups, praising the Siddi community’s literacy achievements and urging families to prioritise education for girls and boys.
- Message of inclusion: The President highlighted the need to ensure equality and inclusive development as India approaches its centenary of independence in 2047, emphasising that tribal communities’ eco‑friendly lifestyles offer lessons for sustainable living.
Why it matters
The visit reinforced the importance of preserving cultural sites and natural heritage while improving the welfare of indigenous communities. By spotlighting education and environmental stewardship, the President encouraged a holistic vision of national development that balances tradition with progress.
