Why in news?

Prasar Bharati’s digital streaming service, the WAVES OTT platform, crossed 8.4 million registered users by March 2026. The milestone was announced in a reply to Parliament. The platform, launched in November 2024, aims to make Indian public broadcasting content easily accessible across devices and languages.

Background

The WAVES OTT platform was unveiled at the International Film Festival of India in 2024 as part of Prasar Bharati’s digital transformation. It offers live television channels, radio streams, films, web series and educational content in more than a dozen Indian languages. The platform integrates e‑commerce through the government‑backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), allowing users to purchase merchandise and products featured on programmes.

Features

  • Multi‑language content: Programming is available in Hindi, English and regional languages, making it accessible to audiences across India.
  • Live and on‑demand: Users can watch over 65 live TV channels or choose from a library of on‑demand shows, movies and documentaries.
  • Interactive services: Integration with ONDC enables viewers to order goods featured in shows, and upcoming updates aim to include games and interactive quizzes.
  • Free access: The companion audio platform “PB SHABD” offers free access to podcasts and radio until March 2027, encouraging more users to explore digital audio content.

Significance

  • Digital inclusion: By streaming public broadcasting content online, Prasar Bharati reaches audiences who may not have access to traditional television or radio.
  • Support for creators: The platform provides a space for new and independent content creators, particularly those producing family‑friendly and regional programming.
  • Cultural preservation: Offering shows and documentaries on India’s cultural heritage promotes awareness and appreciation of diverse traditions.
