Why in news?

In May 2026 the Government of India announced that over 100 crore health records had been digitally linked with Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This milestone reflects rapid adoption of India’s nationwide digital health infrastructure.

Background

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission was launched in September 2021 to create an integrated digital health ecosystem for India. At its core is the Ayushman Bharat Health Account – a 14‑digit unique number that allows individuals to store and share their medical records securely. The mission seeks to unify the fragmented healthcare landscape and make services more efficient and transparent.

Key components of ABDM include:

  • ABHA number: Provides a unique digital identity for each citizen to access health services and link records across hospitals, laboratories and insurance providers.
  • Personal Health Records (PHR) app: Empowers individuals to view, manage and share their health documents with doctors through a consent‑based system.
  • Healthcare Professional Registry: A national database of verified doctors, nurses and other health workers.
  • Health Facility Registry: Lists hospitals, clinics, laboratories and pharmacies that can join the digital network.
  • Health Information Exchange & Consent Manager: Facilitates secure transfer of records between providers only when patients give permission.
  • Unified Health Interface (UHI): Acts like “digital rails” enabling apps to book appointments, telemedicine consultations and other services.
  • National Health Claims Exchange: Streamlines insurance claims and reduces paperwork for both patients and insurers.

Importance of the 100 crore milestone

Linking 100 crore records shows rapid scaling of digital health adoption. It required collaboration between central and state governments, private hospitals, laboratories and health‑tech startups. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have been leaders in linking records. The milestone also demonstrates growing public trust in digital health platforms. By enabling easy access to medical history, ABDM aims to improve continuity of care, reduce duplication of tests and empower citizens to make informed choices.

Conclusion

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission marks a significant step towards a modern, equitable health system. While much work remains to ensure data privacy, interoperability and last‑mile connectivity, the linking of 100 crore records signals momentum for India’s digital public infrastructure and holds promise for better health outcomes.
