Why in news?

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has launched the BHARATI Startup Challenge to encourage innovative agri‑food and agri‑tech startups. The challenge will be showcased at IndusFood 2026, a major trade fair, providing selected startups with global exposure and market access.

About APEDA

APEDA was established in 1985 under an Act of Parliament to promote the export of scheduled agricultural and processed food products. Headquartered in New Delhi, the authority registers exporters, develops industries related to scheduled products, sets quality standards, provides financial assistance and coordinates export promotions. Scheduled products include fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry products, dairy items, confectionery, honey, cereals, groundnuts, spices and beverages.

The BHARATI Startup Challenge

  • Purpose: The challenge aims to identify and support startups developing innovative solutions in agri‑tech, food processing, supply‑chain management and value‑added products.
  • Platform: Selected startups will be featured in a special BHARATI Startup Zone at the IndusFood trade fair, enabling them to showcase products to international buyers.
  • Awards and mentorship: Top startups may receive mentorship from industry experts, funding opportunities and assistance with compliance for export markets. Winners will get the chance to exhibit at global events such as Gulfood in Dubai and BIOFACH in Germany.
  • Impact on exports: By fostering innovation and providing a launchpad for scalable ventures, APEDA seeks to boost India’s agri‑export basket and support the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Significance

  • Boosting entrepreneurship: The challenge encourages young entrepreneurs to develop sustainable and high‑value agricultural products, adding vibrancy to the sector.
  • Market access: By linking startups with international buyers and food‑sector networks, APEDA helps them overcome barriers to entry in global markets.
  • Innovation ecosystem: The initiative complements government schemes supporting agri‑business incubators and research, fostering an ecosystem that can improve farmers’ incomes and reduce post‑harvest losses.

Conclusion

APEDA’s BHARATI Startup Challenge underscores the importance of innovation in making Indian agriculture globally competitive. With targeted support and international exposure, the initiative has the potential to nurture future leaders in the agri‑food sector and expand India’s export footprint.
